What are varicose veins?
The tortuous blue - purple coloured veins visible on the limbs are called as varicose veins. They develop due to damaged valve in the veins and lead to pooling of the blood in these superficial veins which lead to their enlargement.
What is EVLA?
EVLA or Endo Venous Laser Ablation is a minimally invasive technique that seals of the varicosed veins using a laser therapy.
How is EVLA procedure performed?
A small incision is made on the skin on the lower end of the damaged vein and a thin laser fibre is introduced via this incision into the vein. The Laser fibre releases energy which seals off these damaged veins. The average duration of the procedure is approximately around 60 -90 minutes .
Is this procedure safe?
This is an extremely safe procedure and is done under local anaesthesia. But you need to discuss all the possible complications with your doctor.
What precautions should I take after the procedure?
You will be asked to avoid strenuous exercises for 6 weeks.
You will be allowed to walk immediately after the procedure with crepe bandage for initial 5-7 days.
You will need to take medications as prescribed by the doctor.
Avoid warm bath and hot fomation for first few weeks.
What are the side effects of the procedure?
EVLA is a safe procedure and side effects are not routinely encountered , however some minor complications can range from mild redness , pain ,skin changes in a few patients to skin burns , ulceration and DVT in rare cases.
When should I contact my doctor after the procedure?
In case of bleeding or extreme pain after the procedure , you need to consult for doctor on an urgent basis.
